City of Tucson Ward 2 Council Member Paul Cunningham, Ward 4 Council Member Shirley Scott, and the City of Tucson Parks and Recreation Department would like to invite you to join us as we celebrate the renaming of Terra del Sol Park after Claire Weeks. The dedication will take place on Monday, January 27, 2014 at noon at 6754 E. Calle Marte.
Claire has lived in Terra del Sol since 1969 when she moved there from Woonsocket, Rhode Island and most recently retired as the President of Terra del Sol Neighborhood Association. She held this office for 18 years, never losing her enthusiasm to better the neighborhood. During
her time as president, she worked tirelessly to establish a good working relationship with the elementary and high school, community pool, businesses and churches in the neighborhood. Claire obtained grants which brought playground equipment, lighting and a gazebo to Terra del Sol Park. Since the upgrades that she made possible, weddings, parties and neighborhood events, such as an annual children’s Halloween Party, have been held there.
Claire was very active in organizing groups to clean the washes in the neighborhood, paint over graffiti, patrolling the neighborhood at night and created a social group for neighborhood seniors. She coordinated several large neighborhood cleanups, even matching up volunteers to help those unable to do their own work. In addition to being an advocate for the Terra del Sol neighborhood, Claire also volunteered with the Top Dog Agency for 10 years helping to train dogs to assist their owners with daily tasks. She also read the newspaper for the visually impaired on Sun Sounds Radio.
Please join us as we celebrate the life of this remarkable woman whose achievements deserve to be remembered for all time. For more information please contact Sierra Davenport at 837-8032 or Sierra.Davenport@tucsonaz.gov.
